A simple way to work out how much water to store: count what you use, multiply by the days you need to cover, then add a safety margin.
Storage that is too small runs dry; storage that is far too large costs more than it needs to. A short calculation helps.
- List every use: household, animals, irrigation, fish, cleaning.
- Estimate the daily amount for each from your own records or meter readings.
- Decide how many days without refilling you must cover.
- Multiply, then add a margin for evaporation, leaks and growth.
Your own measurements are always better than rules of thumb. If you are unsure, ask us to help you size the system; we will explain our assumptions and you can compare them with your own.
