Water is too precious to guess about. Seven calm, practical questions that help you choose a reservoir you will be glad of for years.
Anyone who has watched a borehole slow down in a dry season knows the feeling: water is not only a resource, it is peace of mind. A reservoir can give you a buffer, but the best ones start with good questions rather than a quick purchase.
1. What will the water be used for?
Irrigation, livestock, household use and fish farming all ask different things of a reservoir. Fish, for example, need depth, shade and good water quality; irrigation mostly needs volume and a convenient outlet.
2. How much do you really need?
Think in days of supply, not only litres. How many days of water would make you feel secure if the source stopped? Our entry-level welded-mesh reservoirs suit smaller needs, while the commercial 50/12 series is for larger operations. Capacities on this website are indicative until confirmed by AQUAEE, so always ask for the verified figure.
3. Is the ground ready?
The base carries the full weight of the water. It should be level, firm and free from sharp objects. A poor base is the most common cause of avoidable problems.
4. How will the water get in and out?
Plan your inlet, overflow and drain before the reservoir arrives. An outlet and drain fitting kit makes emptying and cleaning far easier.
5. Will it be exposed to sun, birds or animals?
Open water loses volume to evaporation and can invite unwanted visitors. See our companion article on protecting a reservoir.
6. Who will install and maintain it?
Be honest about the skills and help you have. If you would like support, AQUAEE offers a site assessment.
7. What is the total picture, not just the sticker price?
Include the base, fittings, any cover and the time to install. Ask for a written quotation so you can compare like with like.
